Bob Dylan: The Recording Sessions

Part Four

by Michael Krogsgaard
In a small town - Rosendale - upstate New York, they used to produce the hardest cement you could get. The basis for this cement was limestone, which was mined in the hills around Rosendale. Then came Portland cement, which was cheaper to produce and which meant an end to Rosendale cement. During the cold war there was concern about a possible nuclear war, which created interest in how to preserve valuable data and recorded material from destruction. The old mines got a renaissance; first an old iron mine (which gave name to the company Iron Mountain), and later the limestone mine in Rosendale. In Rosendale more than half a million tapes are now stored in the old mine. Among these are several thousand Bob Dylan tapes. This is why I found myself underground, upstate New York, to do research for the next article in this series.

Excluding the live album "Hard Rain" and the movie "Renaldo and Clara", time has now come to consider "Street Legal", "Slow Train Coming" and "Saved".

The recording of "Street Legal" actually started with a number of auditions to find a replacement for background vocalist Debbie Dye, who left the band after the tour in Japan/Australia/New Zealand. On April 13, 1978, two singers auditioned - unsuccessfully. On April 19, Carolyn Dennis had her first audition, which was continued on April 20 and 21. It must have turned out satisfactory, and on April 24 she rehearsed with Bob Dylan and Bobbye Hall.

Unfortunately none of the tapes from these rehearsals are stored in New York and they have not been available for viewing. This is also the case for most of the multitrack tapes from the real "Street Legal " session. Information about these sessions is therefore incomplete.

The takes to make up the album were laid down in 5 days on 24 tracks, starting April 25, 1978:

"Planet Waves", "Blood On The Tracks" and "Desire" were all recorded in 6 days (excluding overdubs). The 3 following albums - "Street Legal", "Slow Train Coming" and "Saved " - were each recorded in just 5 days.

For "Slow Train Coming" unfortunately 2 of the 12 24 track masters were not available for examination this time. They have been located, though. An interesting surprise is a full band version of "When He Returns".

"Slow Train Coming" and "Saved" were recorded in the same studio and with the same producers. The musical approach was different, though, as the material on "Slow Train Coming" was basically unknown to the musicians prior to the sessions, whereas the songs on "Saved" had been played by the musicians nearly every night for more than 3 months before the recording sessions.

With 1980 a new era started, when it comes to Dylan's recording tech. "Shot of Love" was the result of multiple sessions, as would be all of Dylan's 1980's albums.

You know of course that "Almost Persuaded" was a "Shot of Love" out-take. But where did "The Girl From Louisville" origin from? Or "Silent Night"? And which song did Bob Dylan record most times and in most different versions during the "Infidels" sessions? These are clues to what some of all the information not yet published is all about.

John Bauldie's tragic death makes it very unlikely that this information will be published in "The Telegraph". All I can promise is that it will be published. Right now I don't know where. don't know when. As earlier I am grateful to ar chivist Mark Kirkeby, Matt Kelly and others at Sony Music Archives on Manhattan for their help during the research for these articles. I am also thankful to Gregg from Iron Mountain in Rosendale for his efforts to make my days underground as productive a s possible. And thank you to Bo Willart, Malmo, Sweden for letting me study a number of important documents.

Finally, I am grateful to John Bauldie.
